- how to approach an individual in the water
- the dangers of the propeller
- how to safely return the crew to the dinghy
Practice
- orientating a capsized dinghy
- recovering a capsized dinghy using the mast
- when the crew can/cannot assist - recovering an inverted dinghy

Suitable for all LSC SB Drivers and Crew
This is a practical, on-water session, so please dress appropriately.
Before attending you should have completed the following practice sessions:
Practise Towing Dinghies using 3 different methods
- Sail/Mast across SB hull
- Astern
- with and without the helm in the dinghy - Alongside
- with and without the helm in the dinghy
Practise Towing a variety of dinghies used at LSC, for example
- PICO, Laser, Solo, Wayfarer, Phantom, Supanova, Laser 2000
Towing dinghies through the lagoon
- arriving at the slipway
Towing a dinghy off a lee shore, for example
- the beach near Salterns
- the rocks outside the entrance to the lagoon

Suitable for anyone who undertakes Dinghy Race Duties
The session will take 1-2 hours. It is based in the clubhouse and outside on dry land
- you will not need to wear sailing gear; however, please wear/bring appropriate outdoor clothes as some practice exercises will be outside
Basic use of a VHF radio
Practise
- changing channels for
- LSC races channel P4
- EDSC races channel 37 or 37a
- Emergency channel 16 - checking the power level is set to low
- putting the radio into a waterproof cover
- completing a radio check with the other SB and Little Holly - our Committee/Race Start Boat
- adjusting the volume and squelch
- making a basic call
- storing and charging the VHF radio

Understand

Practise preparing the Support Boat (SB) for launch
- raising and lowering the engine before moving the SB
- securing Big Bertha, the large, yellow round buoy
- on land, if not needed, so that it does not blow away
- to the SB, ready for towing it behind the SB, when on the water - inserting the expandable bung into the inner hole of the stern well, that is, always pointing forward
- checking the water outlet is clear of obstructions
- using the brush to clean the water inlet grills so they are clear of weed, mud, debris etc
- throwing the throw bag
- flushing the engine
- securing the SB after use
Understand how to
- complete the SB Log including any equipment issues
- post any issues on the Dinghy WhatsApp, so they can be rectified ASAP
- recognise what type of safety issues you should record in the Incident Book and how to write this up appropriately and maintain confidentiality
