SB5 Recovering Dinghies and Crew

SB5 Recovering Dinghies and Sailors

Suitable for

  • PB2 Qualified Drivers who are confident and competent in the driving skills listed in SB3 Driver and Race Duty Skills
  • Crew wishing to develop the skills needed to assist SB drivers in more challenging situations

Before attending, please 

  • Watch Swanage Sailing Club’s Safety Training Video.
    - There are some excellent hints and tips; however a few bits which will not be relevant to LSC for example Righting a Catamaran

Objectives

Understand 

  • how to approach an individual in the water
  • the dangers of the propeller
  • how to safely return the crew to the dinghy

 Practice 

  • orientating a  capsized dinghy 
  • recovering a capsized dinghy using the mast
    - when the crew can/cannot assist
  • recovering an inverted dinghy

SB4 Towing Skills

Suitable for all LSC SB Drivers and Crew 
This is a practical, on-water session, so please dress appropriately.

Before attending you should have completed the following practice sessions: 

  • SB1 Shore Based Preparation
  • SB3 Drivers and Race Duty Skills

Practise Towing Dinghies using 3 different methods

  • Sail/Mast across SB hull
  • Astern
    - with and without the helm in the dinghy
  • Alongside
    - with and without the helm in the dinghy

Practise Towing a variety of dinghies used at LSC, for example 

  • PICO, Laser, Solo, Wayfarer, Phantom, Supanova, Laser 2000

Towing dinghies through the lagoon 

  • arriving at the slipway 

Towing a dinghy off a lee shore, for example

  • the beach near Salterns
  • the rocks outside the entrance to the lagoon

SB2 Basic use of VHF Radio

Suitable for anyone who undertakes Dinghy Race Duties
The session will take 1-2 hours.  It is based in the clubhouse and outside on dry land
- you will not need to wear sailing gear; however, please wear/bring appropriate outdoor clothes as some practice exercises will be outside 

Basic use of a VHF radio

Practise

  • changing channels for
    - LSC races channel P4
    - EDSC races channel 37 or 37a
    - Emergency channel 16
  • checking the power level is set to low
  • putting the radio into a waterproof cover
  • completing a radio check with the other SB and Little Holly - our Committee/Race Start Boat
  • adjusting the volume and squelch
  • making a basic call
  • storing and charging the VHF radio

SB1 Shore Based Preparation

Suitable for Drivers and Crew who undertake Dinghy Race Duties
The session will take 1-2 hours.  It is based in the Club House and outside on dry land
- you will not need to wear sailing gear; however, please wear/bring appropriate outdoor clothes

Before attending

Understand

  • Your responsibilities as Driver and Crew
  • The Safe Loading of the Support Boat (SB)
  • What clothing, footwear and buoyancy aid you need to wear
  • The importance of bringing reading glasses if you use them
  • That you may have to enter the water to
    - assist someone, for example, in the unlikely event they have a head injury
    - to help recover a dinghy, but only if you are confident in doing this

Practise checking that all equipment

  • is in place, up to date, in good working order following the SB1 Check Equipment LINK


Understand

  • your responsibilities as driver and crew
  • how to use an orange flare
  • how to use the following checklists:
    - SB1a - Checks Before Moving SB LINK
    - SB1b - Check Stern of SB LINK
    - SB1c - Check Fuel Locker LINK
    - SB1d - Check Fore Locker LINK
    - SB 1e - Recover SB

Practise preparing the Support Boat (SB) for launch

  • raising and lowering the engine before moving the SB
  • securing Big Bertha, the large, yellow round buoy
    - on land, if not needed, so that it does not blow away
    - to the SB, ready for towing it behind the SB, when on the water
  • inserting the expandable bung into the inner hole of the stern well, that is, always pointing forward
  • checking the water outlet is clear of obstructions
  • using the brush to clean the water inlet grills so they are clear of weed, mud, debris etc
  • throwing the throw bag
  • flushing the engine
  • securing the SB after use

Understand how to

  • complete the SB Log including any equipment issues
  • post any issues on the Dinghy WhatsApp, so they can be rectified ASAP
  • recognise what type of safety issues you should record in the Incident Book and how to write this up appropriately and maintain confidentiality
